Penn State wireless 2.0 with Ubuntu Linux

The problem If you go to one of Penn State's campus' and have a laptop running ubuntu linux  it's pretty easy to log on to the internet.  For security reasons, Penn State protects their wireless connections using either a VPN or user authentication.  Most of the 'tech' guys don't know how to do much more than run an installer program, which is all that is necessary if you have a windows or mac os but when it comes to linux, they're clueless. The benefit If you use ubuntu, your in luck.  Ubuntu 10.04 comes ready right out of the box to connect to psu's v2 network.  I would say it's even easier than on windows because it connects you automatically every time you open your laptop. The solution So how do you set it up? Click on the wireless icon on the top panel and select the psu ssid. A dialog will open up, fill in the following information under the wireless security : Network nam

Send and Recieve Penn State Webmail using Gmail

Gmail is one of the best and easiest email services available.  It's free, widely used, compatible with nearly everything and has tons of great features.  PSU Webmail on the otherhand, well lets just say it's not quite as good.   If you're like me, the last thing on your mind after a day of classes and studying is checking the PSU Webmail about important news and other information. I check my Gmail at least once a day but my PSU Webmail... I can't even remember the last time I logged on. So this is for anyone who woke up two hours early and went to class only to find out that your teacher decided to take the day off. How to setup sending and recieving PSU Webmail through a Gmail Account: To Recieve Mail from PSU Webmail Login to Gmail and select settings from the top right corner. Under settings, open the Accounts and Import tab. Find the Check Mail using POP3 heading and click the Add POP3 email account. Enter your PSU Webmail address and click next.

Penn State Wireless 1.0 VPN with Ubuntu Linux

I already posted an article on how to connect to Penn State's wireless 2.0 with Ubuntu 10.04 , but I've found recently that during peak hours at school the network can get incredibly slow.  Since Penn State's 2.0 and VPN wireless systems probably run through different routers and switches, at time's it's good to know how to use both.  So here's a quick article on how to use the VPN. Install the Cisco VPN client package.  You can do this either by installing network-manager-vpnc from the Ubuntu software center or by typing the command sudo apt-get install network-manager-vpnc into a terminal. Once installed, you have to restart the network manager to get the VPNC to show up.  Simply log out and log back in and that should do it.  If not you can enter sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart into a terminal. If neither work, restart the computer. Now we're ready to configure our new vpn.  Click on the networking applet from the top panel and und
